Another product line of the Fuhse GmbH was the Rolladen WX1.

The desigh goal was to give the windows at night the same insulation as a well insulated wall. In order to do so, conventional Rolladen or blinds were not sufficient and even could not be modified.

We designed a completely new sort of Rolladen. The most important particularity was its thickness of 5 cm. This was essentially required to meet the design goal.

This - on the other hand - posed some problems as to the architectural integration. But there were quite some interesting solutions. One is shown in this picture. Thereby the rolladen rolls up in the roof expansion, which - as can be seen in the picture - is closed by the tilted wooden panels. This arrangement of Rolladen housing allows for a high intake of light, and a volume large enough to house the Rolladen during day time.

As energy becomes an even more valuable "raw material", the thermal insulation of houses, in particular in the northern aereas of Europe, is a matter of high interest. As in Germany, many countries have made special regulations as to minimise the energy losses of houses during the cold seasons.

The Rolladen WX1 goes even beyond the legal requirements. Its design goal was to give a double glased window at night a k- value of 0,5 Watts/(squaremeter x Kelvin).

By doing so, the window has in effect a positive energy ballance, because the energy loss during night would be smaller than the energy gain during the day, when the light is shining into the room.

This allows for a completely new architecture. It makes possible to realise the dreams of Gropius, le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe and many other Bauhaus architects, who wanted to enable a life as close to free nature as possible, just being separated from the harsh environment by a glass wall.

The architecture is made possible with the Rolladen WX1. The owners of houses, which are equipped with the Rolladen WX1 say unanimously that "itīs an entirely different living from what they used to." In fact, they feel free and close to the surrounding. Even in winter, they profit from their gardens. On the other hand, during night, the rooms are cosy and comfortably warm. And the heating bill is significantly reduced to other houses.
