An industrial control unit has been set up with direct network interfacing. There are many new features in this unit, as the internal bus- system, which allows for easy extension up to 64 additional interface cards, as the ability to be extended to a multi- processor system using the newly developped cockpit computer system, and as low power consumption and internal watch dog device.
The concept of the Cockpit system is a parallel arrangement of at least 3 computers perfomring basically the same task. But, in contrast to different systems, which essentially rely on the perfect agreement of all three computes, the cockpit system lets just one computer do the work, whereas the others just monitor. Only, if the "pilot" does an action, where the two others don´t agree, there will be an an alarm or a "mutiny", whereby another computer takes over.
This cockpit concept is not a rigid system. It allows the "copilots" to do other things, which the pilot cannot do, as he is tied up with piloting Your machine through stormy wheather. The essential thing is, that there are several computers, working on the same task. The cockpit system essentially requires all processors to have access to the same periphery. This, of course, is garanteed in the case of the ABC- bus system. However, the cockpit computer system, as it stands, provides even more a direct parallel interfacing of the processors to the on the spot periphery, thus ensuring a high speed operation of the cockpit computer control system.
The unit in this picture has 4 digital I/O- cards, a built in A/D- converter with 64 channel multiplexer and other peripheral interfacing devices, all directly accessed by 4 processors simultaneously. the system is supported by varous programmes, interlinking the pilots and the copilots.
The lower part of the picture shows a slide away terminal for 19 "- rags; this terminal is a separate ABC- unit and controls the FX1- unit via the ABC- bus.
